Hi there! How are you today? If you take a good look around, I’m sure you will discover that God has been good to you. He has blessed you with the sun in the day, the moon at night, good food, nice friends and life to enjoy all His provision. Just take a break and say “thank you Father”. Good! God loves it when you show appreciation.
First and foremost, I would like to let you know who a teenager is. A teenager is a young person or adolescent between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. Does that describe you? Then, this column is primarily for you.
Has anyone ever told you that “you are special”? YOU ARE! God said so and what He says is always true – He cannot lie.
… The Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself… (Deuteronomy 7:6)
The New Living translation puts it like this:
…of all the people on the earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure. (Deuteronomy 7:6)
Did you hear that? God has chosen you as His own special treasure. You are so special and so unique that nobody else has your finger print. Wow! That is amazing. In fact, someone may look like you, but nobody can be you. You are just ‘one’ on this earth. This means that what God has planned for you, no one else can do it.
Our topic today reads “why should I be different?” The reason is simple – YOU WERE CREATED DIFFERENT! You can’t be anyone else and God does not expect you to try to be someone else. YOU ARE UNIQUE and according to the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the word ‘unique’ means to be the only existing type of a thing. That is like saying you are one of a kind.
You are the best! You have the best qualities inside of you. You are not like the rest – you are in a class of your own. That’s who you are so you better believe it and act that way.
Hear what God says in 1 Peter 2:9:
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, A PECULIAR PEOPLE; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you…
This is awesome! You are peculiar! You are extraordinary! You are distinct! You are inimitable which means that you are of very high quality and as such you cannot be copied. Can you see that? You are original! You are rare! The world is blessed to have you. You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14) – without you the world is in total darkness!
With all that you are, how can you carry yourself like other people? No, no, no! you cannot afford to live like the rest of your peers. Among the teenagers you are different so you must walk and talk differently.
A young boy discovered through God’s word that he was special and that he has become a king through Christ, so he decided he would never put on bathroom slippers outside because kings don’t dress that way. Today he is celebrated as a king in the whole world.
Knowing who you are should affect how you think, talk and dress. Now that you know that you are unique, learn to love and appreciate yourself. Strive to stand out among your peers. Make a mark wherever you find yourself.
That scripture in 1 Peter 2:9 ends by saying that you are to show forth His praises. Carry yourself in such a way that you will be seen as an example among your peers. Let the words spoken of you be positive. Let younger ones and even your peers desire to be like you.
God says you are the head, don’t put yourself down. Don’t let others put you down either. Stay on top. Aim high! Be creative! Make your parents proud. Be determined to be the best that God has made you. Let God know He did not waste His time investing in you.
Keep in mind that YOU ARE SPECIAL!
